The optical communication system based on LED traffic lights or LED head/tail lights is presently being studied for the realization of the advanced traffic system. For this purpose, devices for finding the area of signal light sources and receiving the optical communication signals are necessary. This paper presents a CMOS Image Sensor for car-to-car and road-to-car optical communications. A prototype sensor with 640x240 image pixels and 640x240 communication pixels is implemented with 0.18$\mu m$ CMOS technology. As a measurement result, both imaging and optical communication signals are successfully read out. The image signal can be read out at 60fps. The optical signal received with the communication pixel has a sufficient voltage amplitude at the carrier frequency of 1MHz for long range communication of more than 100m. |
