Characteristics of eye movements during visual search tasks with stimulus-independent thoughts
Aya Nishida, Takeshi Kohama (Kinki Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Working inattentively often causes fatal accidents, and these are called "human errors." The detection and prediction of these errors is extremely difficult, and the measurement technology of inattentiveness has not yet been established. In this study, we investigate the effect of stimulus-independent thoughts (SITs) on the performance of visual search tasks. SITs are the streams of thoughts that are unrelated to immediate situations. In this study, the subjects memorized a combination of three numerical characters and their colors presented in advance, and the reaction time and the eye movements were measured while the subjects carried out visual search tasks after having maintained memories of the characters. The influence on reaction time and characteristics of eye movements was evaluated as a function of the number of distracters. As a result, the average reaction time and inter-saccadic intervals increased, and frequency of saccades decreased for saccades in the SIT condition on a naive subject, when compared to the No-SIT condition. The average frequency of microsaccades in the SIT condition slightly increased on all subjects. This suggests the possibility of an objective assessment of the potential danger of the human errors.
