The performance of color constancy, the human ability to perceive constant surface colors despite illuminant changes, was ordinarily higher in real scenes than computer images. We investigated whether binocular disparity contributed to the high performance. In our experiments, the performance of color constancy in real scenes were compared among three viewing conditions containing different disparity information; (1) binocular, (2) monocular, and (3) through synopter (where binocular disparity was zero). The results showed that the performance of color constancy was higher in the binocular condition than the other two, suggesting that binocular disparity improves color constancy in real scenes. Furthermore, we performed another experiment under multiple illuminants with different colors, investigating the role of binocular disparity in estimating special distribution of illuminant colors to accomplish color constancy. |
