Chromaticity and glossiness necessary to perceive goldness.

Appearance of gold depends on the chromaticity and the glossiness of surfaces. In this study we examined the chromaticity region and the degree of perceived glossiness which were necessary to perceive goldness. The intensity of specular component was controlled to make different levels of glossiness. The chromaticity of the test image changed along the red-green direction. The observer estimated degree of glossiness and gold of test images with the magnitude estimation method. The results showed that the goldness turned out to be highest at a certain chromaticity in yellow region, and it decreased as its chromaticity moved both to red and to green directions. On the other hand the glossiness did not depend on the chromaticity of the test image. This means that perceiving goldness needed higher glossiness for surfaces with reddish or greenish yellow
appearance. |
