Extraction of finger nails from skin area in hand image

A gesture interface system will practically be useful if finger-nail positions can be extracted from skin area in a hand image with high accuracy, because a 3D hand pose of a user can be estimated with higher accuracy. That leads users move freely and yet devices can output these movements without meaning that specific movements must be taught to the devices in advance. This paper, there, tries to extract finger-nail area from skin area in a hand image, using original RGV, YIQ, HLS, HSV, and L*u*v* color-coordinate systems, by separating finger-nail and skin areas with a rectangle frame in 2D mapped color-coordinate systems. The experimental results indicate some 2D-mapped color-coordinate systems have relatively significant differences in two areas, that allows to separate finger-nail and skin areas with a rectangle frame. |
