Application and Evaluation of Human Vision on Visual Communications

It is important that we know how the human visual system perceives the real visual world in order to design novel visual communication systems and/or display devices. First, this paper describes examples of image quality evaluation; (1) an image quality evaluation method with multiple impairments based on visually weighted errors, and (2) quality evaluation of locally impaired images. Next, examples of applied human visual system associated with three-dimensional (3-D) perception are described; (1) a phenomenon that makes the human observer perceive depth incorrectly when an object occluded by the frame is displayed this side of the display plane and a technique called “virtual frame” that suppresses this phenomenon, and (2) a novel method called “depth-fused 3-D display (DFD)” that enables a human observer to perceive an apparent 3-D image using only two intensity modulated 2-D images at different depths. |
