Development of High Contrast Ratio and Wide-Viewing Angle Electrowetting Display

(in English) We have developed a transmissive type of electrowetting display driven by passive matrix. In this structure, droplets of polar liquid with black pigment move laterally from one position to another by utilizing electrowetting phenomenon. And the movement of droplets is controlled by three kinds of electrodes and three level of driving voltage. This display has high contrast ratio(CR 60000:1 at display normal direction) and wide viewing angle character (CR 20000 at±70 degree). Moreover the prototype has a memory effect. This feature contributes to low power consumption display system. For these reasons we think this display is suitable for digital signage application.
