Extracting statistical information such as texture or contrast from visual stimuli is an important task for visual processing in both biological and engineering context. The extraction of statistics is interpreted as a process equivalent to hyperparameter estimation in Bayesian theory. This report proposes a framework of empirical Bayes for evaluating the effect of information processing with tiled receptive field structure, which is typically observed in animal retina, on the precision of transferring image statistics information. For a concrete example, I conducted a simulation to derive a relation between receptive field shapes and the communication performance of image statistics under channel noises by quantifying it with Fisher information. The results predict the dependencies of human texture perception on the visual fields and/or information processing pathways such as Magno/Parvo-cellular system. |
