A study of visual features for detecting deer from road image sequences
Marie Katsurai, Miki Haseyama (Hokkaido Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In order to prevent deer-vehicle collisions, it is necessary to analyze and understand deer characteristics and their appearance patterns on roads. In our previous work, we presented an automatic deer detection method using contour features of moving objects as visual features. By contrast, it is well known that combining more than two kinds of features
extracted from images is an effective approach so as to improve performance of object recognition tasks. Thus, if multiple visual features are used to characterize deer appearance, performance improvement of our proposed deer detection method can be expected. In this paper, we study the effectiveness of several visual features for automatic deer detection from road image sequences. Experiments conducted on testing road image sequences show that combination of several visual features can improve performance of deer detection.
