In this paper, we propose two supplemental functions for the existing AR fieldwork support systems, that is, a visual protection function and target verification function, to prevent human errors. The former function is a virtual and alternative approach to the conventional sheet protection that makes target equipment more visible and guards its surroundings in the same fashion as abdominal surgical operations. In the conventional working style, a main operator and one or more assistants form a team to achieve safe operations. Most of the existing systems provide only an “instruction” role. In contrast, the proposed latter function also offers “confirmation” roles, and thus supports field operators in achieving safe operations. Experiments revealed that our prototype system can visually protect network equipment at about 7.4-10.0fps even when some corners of the target object disappear out of screen range. Other results suggest that the target verification requires only 18.7msec to recognize a fingertip and verifies a correct target through a pointing and calling check. |
