Preparation and Evaluation of Molecular-Aligned Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystals for Scanning Backlight

(in English) The thin and lightweight scanning backlight system which enables the brightness control according to the displayed images is expected as a new technology to improve contrast ratio and power consumption in the small display devices. In this report, we have proposed a novel scanning backlight system using the molecular-aligned polymer-dispersed liquid crystal, and investigated the conditions forming for polymer-dispersed liquid crystal using several nematic liquid crystals and (liquid crystalline) monomers. By evaluating their electrooptic properties, we found that the parallel-aligned polymer-dispersed liquid crystal cell using bifunctional monomer and low viscosity nematic liquid crystal can realize excellent light scattering ability, low voltage driving less than 15V, and fast response time less than 2ms.
