A Trial Analysis of Elderly Drivers'Characteristic Behaveor Using Wearable Sensors

In this paper, to know the cause of increasing elderly drivers' accident, we performed an experiment with 47 elderlies using driving school vehicle. In our experiment, we measured driver's scanning behavior for checking safety and vehicle speed at preset five intersections using wearable sensors together with GPS. By analyzing the measured data based on driving instructors' knowledge, we evaluated his/her safety driving skill at the intersections from the viewpoint of active safety. The result shows that elderly drivers do not always behave riskily; they carefully scanned around for checking safety when crossing broad roads. In contrast, our result also found out that elderly drivers tended to not carefully scan around when crossing narrow streets such as streets in residential area. This could lead to increase traffic accident risk. |
