Characteristics of E/O and O/E Converters for UHDTV Satellite Broadcasting Reception

(in English) A 12-GHz (11.7 to 12.75 GHz) band satellite service with dual-circular polarization is being studied for transmission channels to deliver 8K Super Hi-Vision, and so on. A satellite broadcasting receiving antenna converts the 12-GHz band signals to the intermediate-frequency (IF) band signals to carry the received signals on a single coaxial cable, generally. The IF-band of 1 to 2 GHz is currently in use. In addition, ARIB Standard STD-B63 (STD-B63) defined the IF-band of 2 to 3 GHz for the signals with left-circular polarization. STD-B63 also defined the specifications of a fiber optical transmission system for the IF signals. Since the optical transmission system requires E/O and O/E converters, it is necessary to study the relationship between the distortion, which occurred in the optical transmission system, and the transmitting performance. Therefore, we fabricated the E/O and O/E converters in accordance with the specifications of the standard and tested the converters. We studied the degradation of required CN ratio from the evaluation results in interference power, which was caused by inter-modulation distortion, and bit error rate by using an experimental system with 48-wave modulated signals.
