Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study examined the experiments using animal subjects to reveal the mechanism of human color constancy. Previous studies on human color constancy assumed that a priori knowledge of color and luminance in the environments is required for consistently perceiving color. However, the knowledge required for color constancy was not empirically confirmed because the experiments for such confirmation were difficult to conduct by using human observers. In this study, the three requirements (i.e., color vision, the relation to a parent, and the speed of development) of the experiments using animal subjects were discussed to empirically confirm the knowledge required for color constancy, and the preliminary experiment using white leghorn chickens that meet the requirements was conducted in order to examine their color constancy. The results obtained from the experiment indicate that their color constancy were acquired. These findings demonstrate that white leghorn chickens are suitable for the subjects of the experiments to empirically confirm the knowledge required for color constancy.
