Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A backside-illuminated multi-collection-gate image sensor (BSI MCG image sensor) achieved the temporal resolution of 10 ns for 300 kpixels and 10 consecutive frames. Light-in-Flight was captured by a single-shot of the sensor for the first time in the world as the success with a silicon image sensor. The sensor with a stacked driver chip will achieve 1 ns. A narrow square silicon guide pipe connecting the backside and the circuit diffusion layer on the front side with an on-chip microlens focusing the incident light to the guide pipe further reduces the temporal resolution to less than 100 ps by eliminating the slow horizontal motions of signal electrons. The resolution is close to the temporal resolution limit of the silicon image sensors, 11.1 ps, theoretically derived by the authors. Furthermore, the Germanium guide pipe replacing the silicon one realizes an ultrafast infrared imaging, and a convex pyramid for the charge collection instead of the guide pipe enables the ultrafast soft X-ray imaging, since the X-ray cannot be focused in a short distance.
