Aroma effects on hemodynamic modulation in the prefrontal lobe based on an fNIRS measurement

(in English) Aromatherapy has begun to attract attention as a treatment for depression. In particular, the aroma of lavender is suggested to have a sedative effect. Previous studies have shown effects of the perception of smell measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) on prefrontal lobe activities. However, the studies had limitations such as a lengthy stimulation or incomplete removal of skin blood flow artefacts in fNIRS signals. In this study, we applied an analytical method to extract functional brain components and objectively evaluated the effect of scent on prefrontal activity. We proposed an experimental design with multiple trials in a short time different from the conventional method, and compared it with the conventional method. As a result, the response to fragrance was confirmed only when measured by the proposed method, suggesting the effectiveness of the proposed method.
