Higher-order textures that attract attention -- Pop-out of material surfaces --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Pop-out among textures depends on low-lever image features and has been known as an outcome of the neural mechanisms underlying bottom-up attention. However, some textures on materials cannot be distinguished by low-level features, and could be represented by higher-order visual cortices. If pop-out is observed among such material textures, it is expected that higher-order visual areas underlie the pop-out. In the present study, we examined this hypothesis through psychophysical experiments, and observed the pop-out among some material textures.
