Effects of competitors on performance and autonomic cardiovascular responses during cycling exercise using virtual reality

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Many sports competitions are won or lost by competing with others for performance. We aimed to test the hypothesis that the presence and behavior of competitive opponents affect athletic performance through emotional and autonomic response to changes. We staged a virtual reality environment that mimicked a situation in which participants (healthy male adult , n = 13) were “overtaking (win)” or “overtaken (lose)” by competitors. They were instructed to perform a cycling exercise at a constant speed (60 rpm). As a result, we found significant differences in cycling cadence, respiratory rate, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate during 2.5 s immediately before the subjects overtook one another. These results suggest that the presence and behavior of competitors elicit emotion and affect motor performance and autonomic responses.
