Peripheral Field Expansion of a Simple Head-Mounted Display By Using Tracking Projection

(in English) In recent years, research and development of Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs), which enable immersive experiences in virtual reality, has been widely conducted to widen the viewing angle of image presentation and enhance the immersive experience. However, conventional research assumes the incorporation of complex optical systems and multiple displays, and the weight of the hardware, increase in the wearing load on the user, and the increase in cost have hindered the spread of HMDs. In this study, we propose a method to expand the field of view of a simple HMD consisting of a small display by extending the peripheral area outside the viewing angle of the HMD by tracking projection. In this paper, we create a lightweight wearable screen for projecting peripheral images, and implement a system that can extend the periphery of a simple HMD using distortion correction projection with Two-Pass Rendering.
