Semi-passive Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided System with Reflection Modulation ○Chengbo Liu・Na Chen・Minoru Okada(NAIST) |

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which consists of massive low-cost passive elements, can extend the coverage, enhance the received signal, suppress the interference, and increase the data rate as well as energy efficiency (EE). To further improve the SE, RIS with reflection modulation (RIS-RM) has been proposed by leveraging the concept of the index modulation (IM) which conveys the extra information via the index of the transmission entities such as antennas and subcarriers. Specifically, we can utilize the ON/OFF state of each RIS element to create a virtual constellation point by their combinations. However, RIS with fully passive elements suffers from the severe product path loss (i.e., multiplication of path loss from transmitter to RIS and from RIS to receiver). We propose the system called semi-passive RIS-RM which equips with some active elements. The simulation results show that the proposed system can not only mitigate the effect of multiplicative path loss, but also have better bit error rate (BER) performance than that of RIS with reflection pattern modulation (RIS-RPM). |
