Effects of foreground and unequal shielding on depth perception
Nobutaka Natsui, Hisaki Nate, Kazuo Ishikawa (Tokyo Polytechnic Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) When observing binocular stereoscopic images using HMDs, problems such as unnaturalness and discomfort in stereoscopic perception may occur. In this experiment, we measured the change in depth perception under the condition of occlusion by the foreground. The experiments were conducted under the conditions where the foreground was present but not occluded, and under the conditions where the left and right sides of the stereoscopic targets were occluded unequally by occlusion. The experimental results showed that the depth perception in the foreground but unobstructed condition was slightly more compressed than the theoretical value. In the unevenly shielded condition, the compression perception was almost equal and tended to converge to the same point.
