An analysis of microsaccades and attentional direction induced by bottom-up attention shifts

(in English) This study experimented with inducing bottom-up attention shift to peripheral spotlight stimuli presented at random timing to clarify the effect of bottom-up attention on microsaccades. The luminance of the stimuli was set to four levels based on the visual perception threshold of each subject. Microsaccades were extracted from the fixation eye movement data measured under each condition using a moving sum-of-squares filter, and their frequency characteristics were analyzed. The results showed that the microsaccade rate showed a transient response only for stimuli above the visual threshold, indicating that bottom-up attention is involved in the microsaccade generation mechanism. On the other hand, no clear causal relationship was found between the microsaccade direction and the attention direction. These results suggest that bottom-up attention affects the microsaccade rate but is unrelated to the microsaccade direction.
