The Interaction between Depth Cues in a Reverspective Dispplay

(in English) Reverspective is a series of fascinating pictorial works created by British artist Patrick Hughes. In these paintings on 3D canvases, monocular depth cues, such as shading and linear perspective, are considered to overrides binocular disparity in depth perception. This study investigated how binocular disparity information is processed when binocular depth cues are inconsistent with monocular depth cues by using the depth reversal illusion in a Reverspective. We projected a 3D test image with binocular disparity on the canvas and conducted a depth judgment experiment. The results showed that stereopsis was neither suppressed nor reversed regardless of the depth reversal perception of the entire canvas.
