The effect of luminance on footstep illusion

(in English) When two squares of different luminance move across the vertical grating pattern at a constant speed, the squares appear to accelerate or decelerate alternatively. This phenomenon is known as 'Footstep Illusion' (FI). Previous studies have proposed that FI is induced by the misperception of the speed, due to the change of the background contrast. In the present study we measured the strength of FI while manipulating the luminance contrast of the background systematically. We found that FI did occurr at the equiluminant point of the background red-green grating. We discussed the relationship of FI and the luminances of the squares.
