Effect of Auricle Shape on Sound Localization

(in English) The head-related transfer function (HRTF) represents the physical transfer characteristics of sound waves until they arrive at the listener’s ear via reflection and diffraction at the auricle, head, and body. In order for humans to perceive sound images realistically, the HRTF must be personalized. In this paper, we use multiple regression analysis to investigate the relationship between auricule shape and spectral cues, which contribute to the perception of sound image in the upward direction, in order to clarify the cause of this error. The experimental results show that among the spectral cues, two auricule shapes contribute to the first notch N1 and one to the second notch N2, indicating that the cause of the front-back and upward sound image localization errors in the previous study may be due to differences in the causes of the spectral cues.
