Proposal of the hierarchical depth-cue technique and evaluation of its first and second hierarchies

(in English) We propose and evaluate a new technique of presenting virtual objects at freely-selected positions in outdoor far depths of optical see-through mixed reality. This technique separates depth cues into three hierarchy and gives virtual objects them for each hierarchy. In the first hierarchy, binocular disparity and vergence are given to indicate the objects are in far depths. In the second hierarchy, information of the objects’ sizes is given to indicate rough depths of the objects. In the third hierarchy, information based on scene understanding is given to indicate accurate depths of the objects. The experiment is conducted to evaluate the first and second hierarchies by using an optical see-through head-mounted display. The experimental results indicate the objects are perceived around the intended depths, and this supports the feasibility of the technique.
