Spatial-frequency characteristics against visual field eccentricity in head-centered coordinate system -- Preliminary assessment in lower and temporal sides --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) An ideal head-mounted display should be filled with pixels with a density exceeding the spatial resolution of the human visual system in the entire field of view, but considering the characteristics of the visual system, the density may be lower at the periphery of the visual field. However, since users can freely move their eyes while wearing a head-mounted display, the relationship between the visual field eccentricity and the required spatial resolution must be described in the head-center coordinate system. To investigate this, pink noise images were presented on a curved surface display installed along a virtual sphere with a radius of 1,000 mm centered on the eyeball, with the frequency components higher than a specific spatial frequency removed. The results showed that the higher the spatial frequency used as the criterion for removal, the smaller the threshold eccentricity tended to be and that the trend was more salient in the temporal side than in the lower side.
