On-chip beam steering devices have been widely investigated for automotive and industrial LiDAR applications. We proposed a liquid crystal (LC) tunable antenna consists of a LC core sandwiched by distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs). The device performs a LC-tunable beam control in a second axis in addition to a one-dimensional optical phased array (1D-OPA) steering, thereby achieving 2D beam steering without being restricted by mechanical periodic motion. By using this characteristic, an adaptive irradiation LiDAR can be realized to measure the region of interest at an arbitrary timing.
In this work, the protype LiDAR with the LC tunable antenna was constructed and demonstrated to track and measure the distance to a person recognized by a camera. |
