Non-contact Heart Rate Estimation based on Thermal Radiation from the Human Body using Far-infrared Camera

(in English) Heart rate is a type of biometric information that is useful in health management and emotion estimation. Traditionally, contact-type measurement device have been used to measure heart rate, but depending on the subject's skin condition, it may be difficult to bring the measurement device into contact with the subject. Therefore, a non-contact heart rate measurement method is desired. In this paper, we propose a heart rate estimation method using principal component analysis (PCA) based on time series analysis of far-infrared video images. Based on the hypothesis that temperature changes caused by pulse-derived blood volume fluctuations are conducted to the surrounding skin tissue and also radiate to the surrounding space, PCA is performed on far-infrared video images taken of the subject and his/her surroundings. Frequency analysis is performed on the obtained principal components to estimate the heart rate. This method enables highly accurate heart rate estimation without detecting the position of blood vessels. The estimation accuracy of this method was the most accurate compared to the comparison method.
