Image Size Reduction with Coding Difficulty Estimation as Preprocessing for High Compression Coding

(in English) In a system with image size reduction before encoding, coding distortion such as block distortion is likely to occur at a pixel position with high coding difficulty. To reduce the coding difficulty, proposed method estimates the coding difficulty from an original image and coding information of its reduced-size image. The coding difficulty is then reduced by increasing an amount of bandwidth limitation at the pixel position with high difficulty for the image size reduction processing. If iterative processing is allowed in the proposed method, spatial high-frequency power of the original image and QP information of encoded reduced-size image are used to estimate the coding difficulty. In contrast, if iterative processing is not allowed, the coding difficulty is estimated using only the spatial high-frequency power information of the original image based on a pair information of the spatial high-frequency power of the original image and the QP of the encoded reduced-size image. The pair information is calculated by performing the processing with the iterative processing using this system in advance. In experiment, effectiveness of reducing the coding difficulty is evaluated in the conventional and proposed methods. In discussion, the experimental results and effectiveness of suppressing the coding distortion is examined in the conventional and proposed methods. In addition, use of motion vectors in the inter-picture prediction to improve the reduction of coding difficulty is examined in the proposed method.
