Proposing a Evaluation Method for Typing Performance Based on Finger Movement Data

Improving typing performance is a major issue in an information-oriented society, and a method to quantitatively evaluate typing performance is required. Until now, typing performance has been evaluated based on speed and accuracy indices, but we believe it is significant to investigate a new typing performance evaluation method that uses hand movement data. In this study, we developed a typing application that can measure hand movements using a small motion tracking device, and proposed a method to evaluate the amount of hand movement and the presence of hand fixation from hand movement data during typing. In this study, as the first step of the verification, the first author himself became a subject and obtained the amount of wrist movement while typing. As a result, the amount of movement of the left wrist was 99.9 [mm] and that of the right wrist was 141.7 [mm]. Whether or not this index is useful in the evaluation of typing performance needs to be studied more deeply through further subject experiments. |
