Suppression of signal quality degradation due to nonlinear optical effects using optical correlation receivers or FIR filters

(in English) Inter-symbol interference occurs in optical signal transmission in optical fibers due to the compound effect of wavelength dispersion and nonlinear optical effects. In addition, the signal quality deteriorates due to changes in phase rotation caused by self-phase modulation induced by changes in optical intensity for each signal pattern due to this effect. We have been studying a receiver technology that can remove signal noise and separate time-division multiplexed signals using an optical correlation receiver that takes the product of a reference light and a received signal and integrates the output waveform over time. In this study, as a basic investigation of inter-symbol interference using an optical correlation receiver, we examined the improvement of signal quality using an FIR filter that performs a sum-of-products operation of the received signal and filter coefficients in the same way as an optical correlation receiver.
