The influence of sustained attention on microsaccade direction

It is well known that microsaccades and attentional states are closely related, but the relationship between the direction of microsaccades and the direction of attention remains unclear. Previous studies have suggested that there is no correlation between the direction of bottom-up attention and the direction of microsaccades. On the other hand, there are conflicting theories about top-down attention, suggesting a correlation between the direction of microsaccades and the direction of attention, and that there is no correlation. In these reports, the experimental conditions differed depending on whether sustained attention was required, suggesting that the correlation between
microsaccade direction and attentional direction may be due to sustained attention. In order to clarify the relationship between the direction of microsaccades and attention, we analyzed the direction of microsaccades induced by sustained attention in a target-detection task that could be controlled by sustained attention. The results showed that
the direction of microsaccades was not biased toward the direction of attention in either task, suggesting that there may be no correlation between the direction of microsaccades and sustained attention. |
