Rhythm Performance by Drum Avatar Using Motion Capture System

(in English) We aim to realize a rhythm performance using a drum avatar in the work of generating avatars that play musical instruments from air performance. In rhythm performance using a drum set, our challenge is to faithfully reproduce complex drum performances including closed-hand technique. We introduce an optical motion capture system to generate a drum avatar. Our approach plays drum/cymbal sounds based on the avatar's stick hitting drum/cymbal models in response to air performances using a drum set. Our experiment compares the air movements of a drummer according to drum score with the avatar's reproduction of the rhythm. Our experimental results show that our method faithfully reproduces drum avatar that plays rhythm performance in real time. We demonstrate a session with a drum and a guitar avatars in the virtual band performance.
