The influence of the movement speed of receiver on the flash-lag effect when referees in football make offside decisions

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the characteristics of the flash lag effect are applicable to the offside decision-making of soccer referees for the quantification of their training. The study aims to examine the impact of the flash lag effect on offside decision accuracy and to compare it with the perceived position of a player receiving a pass, considered as equivalent to continuously moving light stimuli during offside judgments. Players receiving passes are considered analogous to continuously moving light stimuli during offside judgments. The offside decision accuracy was compared under four velocity conditions (6.38, 10.21, 14.04, 17.87 deg/s). Additionally, the perceived positions of players receiving passes under each velocity condition were compared. As a result, a decrease in offside decision accuracy was observed as the velocity of players receiving passes increased. However, no increase in decision errors due to the flash lag effect was observed, suggesting a decrease in offside decision accuracy due to cognitive factors distinct from the flash lag effect.
