Fabricating Reflectance Characteristic of Wood Surface Using A 2.5D Printer

(in English) Wood is an important material due to not only its high functionality but also its beauty. The replication of the wood appearance has been practiced and the target factor is mainly its surface texture. There has been, however, less work focusing on anisotropic reflectance characteristic which is an important factor connected to the glossiness. In this paper, we propose a method to fabricate the anisotropic reflectance characteristic using a 2.5D printer. A 2.5D structure of stripes printed with a clear ink can generate varying reflectance with respect to the direction of light. The printing parameters are determined based on a look-up table. An experiment with two kinds of wood demonstrates the availability of the proposed method.
