Analysis of Gaze Tracking by Proficiency Level in FPS Games -- Improvement Strategies through the Eye Movement Patterns of Expert Players --
Rui Tome, Satoru Odo (Okinawa International Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this study, the visual attention and gaze of novice, intermediate, and advanced players during the gameplay of a popular first-person shooter (FPS) game, Apex Legends, was analyzed. It was found that the proportion of time spent focusing the gaze on the reticle (center) increases in proportion to skill level. The findings suggest that for beginners to progress to an intermediate level, it is advisable to primarily focus on the reticle and occasionally check the HUD (interface that displays in-game information directly to the player) as needed. For intermediate players aiming to become advanced, it can be recommended to use the HUD when necessary, and instead of spending excessive time searching for weapons during movement or looting phases, to focus on maintaining situational awareness by looking at the map, death logs, and being cautious of the surroundings. These findings can be considered for future application in the development of guidance and training methods aimed at skill improvement.
