According to previous studies, older people tend to have higher self-assessment of their driving skills than other age groups. On the other hand, in reality, older drivers often perform scanning behavior inappropriately, there is a gap (overconfidence) between their self-assessment and their driving behavior. Scanning behavior is performed to be aware of hazardous objects around the vehicle that could lead to accidents. However, scanning behavior performed inappropriate timing where the hazards cannot be avoided does not contributed to reduce the risk of accidents. In this study, we investigated the relationship between older drivers’ self-assessment and their driving behavior. We focused on whether the scanning behavior at intersection is useful in reducing the risk of accidents. Specifically, we compared whether the presence of overconfidence affects the scanning behaviors of older drivers, using driver monitoring technology to measure scanning behavior while driving, as well as RTK-GNSS to measure vehicle position with centimeter precision. As a result of our analysis, we found that older drivers with overconfidence performed scanning behavior itself at intersections. However, these behaviors performed inappropriate vehicle speeds and positions during scanning compared to older drivers with non-overconfidence, resulted in little effects to reduce the accident of risks. |
