Backlit image enhancement based on fusion of image enhancement results with noise suppression

(in English) Images acquired under backlit conditions contain very bright and/or very dark regions, and the visibility of such images is low. There are many studies to improve visibility by appropriately enhancing these regions. In particular, the enhancement of dark regions is a problem similar to that of low-light image enhancement and is a very important issue for image quality in backlit image enhancement. Specifically, noise may be more dominant in dark regions than image patterns, and it is important to enhance dark regions while suppressing noise enhancement. In this report, we show that backlit images can be enhanced while noise enhancement is suppressed by replacing some of the methods proposed by the authors in the past with a low-light image enhancement method that can suppress noise enhancement. In the experiments, we evaluate the visibility and quality of the enhanced backlit images based on quantitative and qualitative metrics.
