Development of a polarization screen with anisotropic diffusive reflection for AR 3D display

(in English) A 3D display overlaying content in real-world space easily attracts multiple viewers and is expected to be used in entertainment, advertising, and exhibitions. Previous studies implemented AR 3D displays using multi-projectors and half-mirrors or transparent plastic plates with anisotropic diffusive reflection. However, some projected light passes through the screen and hits real objects, causing problems. To solve this, we propose a screen that fully reflects the light using the reflective and transmissive properties of wire-grid polarizers based on light polarization. Anisotropic diffusive reflection was achieved by heat-pressing the wire-grid polarizer into a convex-concave shape. Additionally, we made screens with non-polarized transparent films and wire-grid polarizers and compared their characteristics. Using a real device, we confirmed a reduction in projected light passing through the screen.
