Estimation of arousal level through the analysis of fixation eye movement

(in English) This study aimed to develop a quantitative evaluation technique for fluctuations in arousal levels. We designed an experiment to induce a decrease in arousal while maintaining gaze fixation and subsequently analyzed the dynamic characteristics of microsaccades(MS) derived from the measured fixation eye movements. Our analysis focused on amplitude-peak velocity and MS rate in fixation eye movements immediately preceding the occurrence of slow eye movements (SEM), which is associated with sleep onset. The findings revealed a reduction in MS peak velocity during the 60 seconds immediately before SEM compared to the arousal state. Additionally, we observed a shortening of the MS interval just before SEM, accompanied by increased fluctuations in the fixation eye movements and enhanced power in the 0.25-3.0 [Hz] frequency band. These observations suggest that the dynamic characteristics of MS and the fluctuation component of fixation eye movements are effective objective indices for evaluating arousal levels.
