The brain constantly receives interoceptive signals from peripheral organs, integrating this information to maintain bodily homeostasis and modulating brain functions. The afferent vagus nerve plays a crucial role in transmitting interoceptive sensations. We aim to uncover common principles related to the vagus nerve across various fields. To this end, we have established electrophysiological measurement and manipulation techniques using rodents to verify how multidimensional interoceptive sensory information transmitted to the brain generates neural activity patterns and controls the activity of various organs. In this presentation, I will introduce a wide range of experimental data related to these topics as well as future prospects in this field. |
