Experimental study on radiation-power improvement of balanced up-converter integrated active antenna with differential-feed antenna

(in English) This paper proposes an active integrated antenna with a balanced up-converter for miniature transmitter. The proposed active integrated antenna effectively suppresses the radiation of the local oscillator (LO) signal without using an RF hybrid coupler, which is required for conventional balanced up-converters, by utilizing the characteristics of a differential-feed antenna. Simulations have also confirmed that the conversion gain of the proposed active antenna can be improved by reusing the LO power reflected at the antenna. In this paper, the performance of a balanced up-converter with two unit-mixers, an LO power divider, and IF-band coupler is verified through simulations and measurements of a prototype circuit. The antenna’s reflection characteristics are also measured. Furthermore, in order to confirm the conversion-gain improvement using the LO signal reflection, the radiated power is also measured by connecting the balanced up-converter with several antennas having different feed-line length. Even though the measured results do not show the conversion-gain improvement, the suppression of the LO leak power is confirmed.
