Variation in perceptual alternation time in ambiguous figures due to noise addition

There are a number of known ambiguous figures, in which a single figure has more than one appearance. Sometimes a figure switches autonomously from one way of seeing to the other. This is called perceptual alternation, and it fluctuates rather than remaining constant. In this study, we hypothesized that if perceptual alternation occurs stochastically, then a stochastic resonance phenomenon may occur, and aimed to clarify whether noise addition has any effect on the perceptual alternation time in ambiguous figures. In the experiments, two ambiguous figures called the Attneave’s triangle and the Mach’s book were used. The experimental results confirmed that noise affects the perceptual alternation time for the Attneave’s triangle. In both experiments, the addition of noise to the Attneave’s triangle and Mach's book speeded up the state transitions in the brain. |
