A Point Cloud Downsampling Method based on SHAP for 3D Object Classification

(in English) In recent years, the increasing density of point cloud data has raised concerns regarding the processing burdens in three-dimensional (3D) object recognition. While downsampling is commonly employed to reduce data volume, many methods don’t adequately consider optimization of downstream AI tasks, which results in degradation of classification accuracy. We propose a method to apply the machine learning model explanation method “SHAP” based on the Shapley value of cooperative game theory for the prediction of AI classification models, quantitatively analyze how much each point contributes to the classification prediction and use it as a downsampling strategy. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves 1.86% improvement in classification accuracy compared to the existing method, Farthest Point Sampling (FPS), when the downsampling size is 750 or more points. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in improving accuracy in 3D object recognition.
