Analysis of Eye Movements in Handball Goalkeepers by Learning of Shooting Direction Prediction

This research aims to clarify the relationship between goalkeepers (GKs) of shooting direction prediction in handball penalty throws (PTs) and their eye movements. In our previous experiment (Hirata, 2025), five professional GKs and five novice GKs were asked to predict the shooting direction by selecting from four choices after watching PT videos filmed from a GK’s view. The results showed that, across 72 continuous trials conducted by each novice GK, the accuracy was higher in the latter half trials compared to the first half. This suggests that, as the experiment progressed, the novices may have acquired strategies for directing visual attention and eye movements necessary for accurate prediction. Building on these findings, a learning session was introduced to this experiment in which subjects were shown the correct direction immediately after each prediction. Novice participants were divided into two groups: one group underwent the learning session using 128 PT videos prior to the test session, while the other did not receive any learning. Both groups then completed a same test session and predicted a shooting direction in each trial, during which binocular eye movements were measured. As a result, subjects who underwent the learning session tended to show higher prediction accuracy and exhibited different patterns of eye movements compared to subjects without the learning session. These findings suggest that improving strategies for eye movements can enhance shooting prediction ability and may also contribute to the analysis of the skills of professional GKs. |
