Utilization of Social Media During Disasters -- Current Status and Challenges --
Osamu Uchida, Keisuke Utsu (Tokai Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) To minimize damage during disasters, it is crucial to collect and share disaster-related information promptly. In this context, the use of social media as a communication tool during disasters has drawn increasing attention. In Japan, platforms such as Twitter (now X) were actively used during the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, and since then, social media has become firmly established as an indispensable tool for information sharing during large-scale disasters. However, one major challenge is that the volume of information shared on social media surges dramatically during disasters, making it difficult to identify critical information. Another significant issue is the widespread dissemination of disinformation and misinformation, which caused considerable confusion during the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in January 2024. This paper outlines the current state and challenges of social media utilization during disasters.
