A Preliminary Study on Disparity Optimization for Stereoscopic Volleyball Viewing

We aim to improve the visibility of volleyball broadcasts on autostereoscopic 3D displays by investigating disparity control methods. Volleyball broadcasts are characterized by predominantly distant scenes and frequent depth motion. When the baseline is close to the human interpupillary distance, disparities at such distances become too small; therefore, longer baselines are employed to secure sufficient disparity. However, excessive disparities can cause visual discomfort. To address this, we use disparity maps and saliency maps to adjust disparities near the gaze point toward zero, thereby balancing comfort and depth perception. The effectiveness of our method is validated through quantitative analysis of disparity distributions and subjective evaluations of play visibility and sense of presence. |
