Recently, binocular 3D displays have advanced rapidly, systems that rely only on parallax often induce visual discomfort due to the vergence–accommodation conflict (VAC), and head-mounted displays (HMDs) add the burden of prolonged wear. We propose a device-free autostereoscopic display that preserves spatial resolution and brightness while providing accommodation cues by integrating a directional backlight based on a retroreflector with layered displays. Eye-conjugate illumination with the retroreflector minimizes the eyebox and thereby suppresses crosstalk, and combining the backlight with the polarization-selective VA-LCD mitigates image degradation. Ray-tracing verifies the coexistence of parallax and accommodation cues, and an analysis assuming retroreflector return-angle errors indicates low crosstalk. These results suggest that a VAC-free, glasses-free and comfortable stereoscopic experience can be achieved with a simple optical architecture. |
