Accommodation stimulating autostereoscopic display by multilayer display surfaces

(in English) Recently, binocular 3D displays have advanced rapidly, systems that rely only on parallax often induce visual discomfort due to the vergence–accommodation conflict (VAC), and head-mounted displays (HMDs) add the burden of prolonged wear. We propose a device-free autostereoscopic display that preserves spatial resolution and brightness while providing accommodation cues by integrating a directional backlight based on a retroreflector with layered displays. Eye-conjugate illumination with the retroreflector minimizes the eyebox and thereby suppresses crosstalk, and combining the backlight with the polarization-selective VA-LCD mitigates image degradation. Ray-tracing verifies the coexistence of parallax and accommodation cues, and an analysis assuming retroreflector return-angle errors indicates low crosstalk. These results suggest that a VAC-free, glasses-free and comfortable stereoscopic experience can be achieved with a simple optical architecture.
