VR-Based Real Time Simulation of Aerial Images by AIRR

A VR simulator prototype for the reproduction of the aerial image generated by an optical see-through AIRR (aerial imaging by retro-reflection) has been made. Given the positions and orientations of a light source, a beam splitter, and a retro-reflector arranged in the virtual scene, the simulator computes the location of the aerial image and renders it in VR. During rendering, the field of view for each pixel of the aerial image is evaluated along the horizontal axes, and pixels that fall outside the observer’s view are discarded according to the head-mounted display position. The simulator aimed to reproduce the viewing area of the aerial image in real time, synchronized with the observer’s head motion. By comparing the horizontal viewing areas of the aerial images in the VR space and in the real environment, the horizontal viewing area of the simulated aerial image in the VR space reproduced that of the real aerial image well. |
